Positions on the Issues

What qualities and experience does Mica Freeman bring to her role as a Will County Board Member?
My entire life has been about helping people in whatever way I can. As a teacher, I worked hard to shape the education and lives of my students and their families. As a Will County Board member, I make it my mission every day to listen, learn, and ultimately cast my vote in such a way that I can make a positive influence in the lives of Will County residents. That is my motivation and my passion, and I believe I am best qualified for re-election because I have demonstrated my willingness to cross aisles and divides. Bipartisanship is so important in these divisive times, and it is the only way to truly represent the diverse residents of my district.

Will County Budget
Less than ten cents of every tax dollar goes toward the county budget. It is my priority to discuss and more importantly, to fund critical services that best serve Will County constituents, because those constituents are my first priority. Additionally, if we don’t fully staff and fund those services, overtime will lead to a budgetary deficit, which is not fair to the constituents whom I serve. These sorts of services include allotting funds for new construction projects that will create good jobs for people struggling right now in the midst of a recession and pandemic; community infrastructure; and long-term projects that will help to address a growing environmental crisis.

Infrastructure Improvements
As a Will County Board member, I understand that our economy largely benefits major corporations and economic players—leaving an unfair playing field for the “little guys,” farmers, and small businesses. As a rule, I make it a point to seek out opportunities to elevate these important economic contributors. Moreover, I believe we need to dedicate more time, research, and resources into initiatives that benefit the senior citizens of our community. With an aging population, it is of utmost importance that we care and look out for their safety and wellbeing with programs like the Sunny Hill Nursing Home. Finally, I work to ensure that funds designated for road construction and improvements go toward projects that create new job opportunities and give workers funds to reinject back into their local economy.

Traffic Concerns
Like you, I drive on the congested streets and highways around my home. I notice and am infuriated by the poor conditions of our roads as a result of high traffic. And though I am not an expert when it comes to road construction, I support initiatives in Plainfield that work to alleviate the congestion of our most highly-traveled roads.

Unions
My role as an elected official is not to intervene in negotiations in such a way that could halt negotiations or harm unions. Rather, my priority and responsibility reside in solidarity. I will support union members. If a situation calls for such involvement, I will stand in solidarity alongside union members. But most importantly, I will try to use my voice and my elected office to influence union opposition to be fair to union members in the negotiation process. If re-elected, I will support efforts to secure fair and equitable contracts.
